Dealing with neck pain when running

We live in a culture consumed with electronics, and as we have been finding in recent years is that using these electronics can cause pain in your neck and shoulders. This may seem strange because you would think that most of the pain from running would be found in the lower body. In this article I will explain where the pain in your upper body may come fro and what you can do about it.

Bad posture is a major culprit and can come from sitting at a desk, in a car, or on a couch. Most people do these things, and unknowingly develop bad posture. Working on a computer looking at a mobile phone, and easing your car seat back can put your neck in a very awkward, and un-natural position. Doing this for long periods of time can take a terrible tole on your neck vertebrae and muscles.

Your eye level is very important. To have correct posture your eyes should be level with what you are looking at. If you are looking down this causes your head to tilt down and can disrupt the balance of the weight of your head. Your head is not very heavy and your muscles can handle the weight if your head is balanced directly above your neck. If your head is leaning forward then the weight of your head multiplies, and the muscles in your neck are not made to hold this weight for long periods of time.

What happens if you have this posture for too long? The muscles in your neck become strained from the weight. The pain that can soon develop can be really bad. Most of the time a person will feel this pain in the form of a headache at the base of your skull. The muscles in your neck will spasm, and your shoulders will begin to ache.

Some people have complained of symptoms like neck pain, dizziness, and blurred vision. The neck pain comes from what feels like muscle cramps.This is because of the constant weight pulling down from your head. Your neck muscles pay the price. When the muscles spasm this cause the nerves in the are to become pinched, and inflamed. This in turn causes the dizziness and blurred vision.

When running if you feel this pain you tend to compensate and this makes the situation worse. To compensate for a slouchy stature, you may subconsciously hold your shoulders close to your ears or you may pull your shoulder blades together.Those positions may not feel uncomfortable in the beginning, but they can cause tension and tightness in your shoulder and neck muscles if you run that way for a long time or distance.

This creates a cycle. You are already tense from the pain, and muscle spasms. The key to reversing this and stopping the pain is to be loose when you run. “Be water” The more fluidly you move, the less likely you’ll be tense. And the less pain you have from head to toe, the faster and longer you’ll be able to run. Sounds great doesn’t it?

Focus on certain things when you run. First pay attention to your hands. Pretend as if you’re holding tomatoes in your hands. Don’t crush them. Let your hands hange loose, and shake the out if you feel tension coming on. Move your shoulders as well. Your arms shouldn’t be the only body parts moving above your waist. Let your shoulders move with your stride. This will also help with your balance. Make sure you don’t let a lot of energy to leak from your shoulders, you can let them sway a bit with each step. This will help you to stay relaxed, and cut down on your desire to shrug them up or pull them back.

Most importantly, keep your eyes level. Don’t look down while you run. Of course you don’t want to trip on something, so you still want to watch the terrain in front of you. As you can imagine running while your head is tilted forward could put a huge strain on your neck muscles. The weight of your head combined with the bounce from running could wreak havoc on your neck muscles.

After your run there is something you can do to ease the pain and tension in your neck. Magnesium for tension headaches is proven to work. The magnesium lotion I recommend soaks into your skin, and muscles relaxing them. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer.

The message you should take away from this is to keep your eyes looking forward at all times, and your head level. Whether you’re working on your computer, or driving down the road. When you run…run loose.

Staying at a Vacation Home, All Thanks to a Realtor in Anniston

I was in Anniston, Alabama during my last travelling escapade and I must say, it was an experience that is one for the books.

Now, if you are expecting that I am about to tell a story of how beautiful and how cool my stay in the city was, then I will stop you right there before you get too disappointed.

Do not get me wrong, the trip was fun and the experience will forever be in my memory. However, it was nowhere near the typical travel story that people wish to create when they visit new places.

See, while we were in the area, we stayed at a vacation home that we were able to land because of a friend who also happens to be a realtor in Anniston. It was affordable and cozy and it was the only available vacation house that time we went. Seeing where we were staying made us all the more excited for our adventure in the city.

However, the unusual experiences started pouring in – literary.

It all started when we were about to go out for a fishing experience in a nearby fishing haven. We were packing our essentials and was about to head out for the bay when suddenly, it rained. Now, normally, we would not mind a little rain. It is all part of the adventure, right? However, we started hearing thunder noises and then flashes of lightning happened. It was apparently, a storm.

Hence, we had no choice but to stay inside for the night. Being the outdoorsy type, we could only think of so little things to do while inside the vacation home. Thankfully, there was a mini library with interesting books and we ended up spending the night over there, with the fireplace lit and all.

Then, the next “best” thing happened – I felt something wet on my feet. When I looked down, I noticed that rain water has started a small puddle under my chair. When I traced where it came from, it was from the corner wall of the mini-library. The rain was still pouring hard outside and the water through the walls started flowing stronger too.

Of course, we panicked. It was not our house. We were only renting, and to have it destroyed at our watch, even when it was entirely not our fault, is something I do not want to happen. We were also strangers in the area, so we did not know who to call for help. What we did was contact the realtor, and he said that he will contact an experts to check the area before it gets worse while we are still in the vicinity.

We were skeptical that the crew would arrive that very instance because it was still raining hard. However, in less than an hour, there was a knock on the door and the service crew was outside, ready to put a “first aid” to the water situation. After they put an initial solution to the problem, they said they will be back when the storm passes and check out what else they can do so that the incident won’t happen in the future.

When I asked them about the payment, they said that the owner of the vacation house would take care of it. I was shocked and relieved at that news.

It was indeed an experience I will never forget – staying at a house which was on the brink of getting its walls peeled off. However, it was still great to experience the professional service of the people in the area. Overall, they have been nothing but accommodating. I vow that the next time I go back to Anniston, I will make sure that I check the weather reports before planning when to go so that  I can have a better experience.

One thing that I love about my traveling the country is all the different kinds of people that I get to meet. I get to meet people from all over the world and country! So really I get to experience a little piece of every culture. This has helped me with my social skills. I have met so many different people that I do know a lot about other cultures and interest. So when I talk to people about running, I can also relate it to their culture. I honestly think it is just making myself a more well-rounded person. I just love traveling to different races and meeting people.

I met an interesting person this past summer at a race in Alabama. He was a short man but a very good looking guy. He also was in wonderful shape. You could tell that he took really good care of himself. I also noticed that the way he was eating. He had a lot of snacks in his bag and when we would take a break he was always grabbing something out of there. I honestly thought that was really smart and it also saved him some money I am sure. Because everything is  expensive these days. I love the Paleo diet!

After I got done with  the race I politely asked him about his snacks that he had been eating. He told me that he always has nuts, beef jerky, and raisins on him. I asked what type of diet he did and he told me all about the paleo diet. He is the owner of While we were talking, I looked up his site and I was so amazed that his site had so much information on it. He was not trying to sell anything. You can see that he just wants to help people. He has better information that the people at does. He explained everything he could in our conversation, but you can found all the information you want on his site. He has all the paleo answers!

So then I asked how many hours he spends in the gym a week. He just chuckled a little bit and said that he does not go to a gym for exercise. He said that all he does is a full body workout a few days a week. He says he just does a bodyweight workout a few days a week. I was amazed that he did not have a gym membership. He told me that he actually did a workout this morning before the tour. He was showing this site where he puts all his fitness ideas. There is something there for anybody! What is the best full body workout?

I have to admit that he was one of the most interesting guys I have met since I have been touring the country. I am so happy that he has a website so I can always go there for my fitness and diet ideas.

There was a fun run in my area which the main objective was to raise funds for the recovery of a personal injury attorney who was assaulted 2 weeks ago by a couple of drunkards. What worries me is that on the news report, the attorney suffered a few cracked ribs and a broken leg, so it might devastate him if he will be restrained from running for a few months until he fully recovers. But I just hope and pray for the best.

Although there are a lot of cases having the same type of injury managed to have a full recovery usually around 3 – 6 months with proper therapy and nutrition, so I guess he will be okay soon. I just hope he doesn’t overdo it. And he can still manage to do his law work while recovering.

The reports also said that the drunkards responsible for what happened were influenced by drugs. I just wish that they will be punished. And thinking about it, I’m quite sure they will be.  Because they just messed with the wrong man. First of all, he is an attorney and I really believe that the man has lots of supporters. Making Friends Through Marathons


Since the time I started to run marathons, I have met a lot of people who share the same passion that I have for running. Not a lot of people take joy in doing such a strenuous activity. Some join marathons to gain experience and then leave the story behind them after they have crossed the finish line.

I am lucky, however, to have met people who see the beauty and challenge in marathons, to the point that we could meet up in various marathons across the state, without having the need tell each other to meet up. The marathons bring me and my friends together, despite our busy schedules and lives.

Just a while back, however, when I knew my friend George and I would meet for a marathon, he suddenly calls me from his place to tell me that he got into an accident and he can’t join marathons for a few months until he has fully recovered from his demise.

He accidentally slipped on his garage floor. He did not expect the floor to be wet that night of the accident where he was carrying a box from the house to the garage. As it turned out, the roof of his garage had gaping holes already, which allowed rain water to pour inside and damped the whole garage floor.

This should be a lesson: Even the most inconspicuous places in our home needs to be taken care of, less injuries and accidents are sure to happen.

Well, moral story aside, it was utterly sad that my friend and I cannot meet up for the upcoming marathon. If only the injury was not as bad, the marathon would have surely helped him regain from the accident. Marathons may be tiring but in the process they are able to tone your muscles and give your body a stronger build. If George had not been a frequent marathon runner, the damage of the accident would really have been much worse. It’s not easy to land on your back and have a box of heavy stuff fall on you and still come out stronger than all the impact.

George and I will join a welcome-back marathon soon after his doctor gives him the go signal. For now, I go and enjoy life and join marathons on my own for a while, waiting for my friend’s full recovery, soon.

Every year, in February, a lot of tourists visit Barcelona to join the Barcelona Half Marathon. Most of them plan their trips ahead of time to be sure that they can join this amazing event every year. They run for more than 21 km in the city and as they run the streets of Barcelona, they can see how beautiful the place is. There are so many places to visit that tourists will surely love. They run from one beautiful place to another and that is from La Rambla to the place called Sagrada Familia. Most runners were able to savor every kilometer of the marathon and after the race, the winners received their awards in Arc de Triomf. Most of the tourists want to experience more running race, that’s why they want to travel more and find cities that have various running marathon, and here are some of it.

The Coast in Pembrokeshire

Visiting Pembrokeshire coast is one of the best things to do and it is known to have the best views to see. They are the areas of St. Davids and Solva. These areas have a coastal path that tourists encounter great and wonderful scenery and wildlife. It has a long and clean terrain that is perfect for running because it has a smooth road that is nice for their shoes.

Lakeside in Chicago

This place is great for those who love to see unique and incredible architecture as they run along the lakefront in Chicago. Runners start the race in Oak Street beach near the North Michigan avenue and they work their way out in the south along the lakefront trail for about 2 miles until they reach the beautiful Grant Park and a fountain in Buckingham. It is where they can see a good look of the entire skyline in Chicago.
